What is Medical Exercise?
Medical exercise helps those dealing with pain-filled or limited movements to regain pain-free movement. Often times our clients come to us when they are not able to return to their favorite activities after completing physical therapy or undergoing surgery.
We can work with the source of the injury- not just the injury itself- to re-train faulty movement patterns, restore muscle balance, and prevent re-injury.
We do not diagnose or treat any medical conditions; we manage medical conditions and associated muscular imbalances with exercise.
Exercises may include any or all of the following: strength training, flexibility training, spinal or joint stabilization training, and functional conditioning.
With advanced training in the anatomy, pathology and biomechanics of common medical conditions, our medical exercise specialists develop safe and effective programs to help you recover from your physical challenges.
You may have heard it summarized this way before: "it bridges the gap between physical therapy and physical training."
We found the following comprehensive list of What A Medical Exercise Specialist does from the Medical Exercise Training Institute to be very helpful:
Perform safe and effective fitness assessments on clients with medical disorders without causing exacerbation of the condition.
Perform a 12-point musculoskeletal screening on a medical exercise/post rehab client.
Understand the related anatomy, pathology and biomechanics of common medical conditions.
Understand how common medical conditions respond to exercise.
Develop safe and effective conditioning programs for clients with musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
Apply safe and effective medical exercise techniques for the upper and lower extremity and spine.
Communicate effectively with medical professionals and insurance carriers.
Identify the red flags and warning signs that indicate the client is in need of evaluation or treatment from a licensed medical professional.
Understand the role and scope of practice for the medical exercise professional when working with post rehab and medical exercise clients.
Perform a functional assessment on the post rehab client to determine the client’s functional abilities as a means of evaluating the effectiveness of the post rehab program
Document both assessment and training sessions using standardized medical exercise administrative forms and methods.
Who can participate in Medical Exercise?
Anyone who is medically stable may participate in medical exercise. Medically stable implies that your condition is no longer considered acute, and in need of medical attention. If you are unsure whether you are a good candidate for medical exercise, please consult with your doctor.
Will a Medical Exercise program get rid of my pain and allow me full mobility?
Medical exercise can resolve pain and restore full mobility, but much of that depends upon you. Adherence to the recommended program, including attendance to in-office sessions, as well as compliance with your daily home exercise program is critical to your success. Although we can’t guarantee your individual results, our practitioners should be able to give you a good idea about whether medical exercise can help you after a brief discussion. Do I need a physician referral for a medical exercise specialist?
You do not need a referral. Just request a Free Phone Consult and one of our medical exercise specialists will learn more about your goals and challenges.
Even though it is not required, we often have physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors and massage therapists refer their patients or clients to us.
We believe that communicate with your healthcare professionals is important. Our assessments and monthly re-assessments will be sent to your Team so that we can coordinate and provide the best care for you.
Are the trainers certified and insured?
Yes, they are all certified and insured. They are also personally hand-picked by Nathaniel W Oliver and vetted to insure you're getting the best trainers in Manhattan.
Personal Training vs Medical Exercise Training
Personal training is more focused on improving performance levels through cardiovascular activity and weight lifting. Whereas medical exercise may be more focused on improving your health and fitness through specific fitness programs that account for your medical conditions.
Personal trainers specializing in medical exercise DO NOT and CANNOT provide the services of licensed physical therapists, athletic trainers, chiropractors, registered dietitians. Instead, we offer comprehensive physical fitness programs that include:
• Endurance training
• Resistance training
• Flexibility training
